Talking to your healthcare professional about treatment with JUVÉDERM® dermal filler

If you’re considering treatment with JUVÉDERM® dermal filler, your healthcare professional should ask about your medical history to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for treatment. JUVÉDERM® dermal filler should not be used in patients who have:

  • Severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis or presence of multiple severe allergies
  • A history of allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins

Your healthcare professional should also warn you that the safety and effectiveness of JUVÉDERM® dermal filler for the treatment of areas other than facial wrinkles and folds (such as lips) have not been established in controlled clinical studies.

In addition, you and your healthcare professional should discuss the following important treatment considerations in order to help avoid unsatisfactory results and complications:

  • Patients who are using substances that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, as with any injection, may experience increased bruising or bleeding at the injection site. You should inform your healthcare professional before treatment if you are using these types of substances.
  • If laser treatment, chemical peeling, or any other procedure based on active dermal response is considered after treatment with JUVÉDERM® injectable gel, there is a possible risk of an inflammatory reaction at the treatment site.
  • JUVÉDERM® dermal filler should be used with caution in patients on immunosuppressive therapy, or therapy used to decrease the body’s immunes response, as there may be an increased risk of infection.
  • The safety of JUVÉDERM® dermal filler for use during pregnancy, in breastfeeding females, or in patients under 18 years has not been established.
  • The safety of JUVÉDERM® dermal filler in patients with a history of excessive scarring (eg, hypertrophy scarring and keloid formations) and pigmentation disorders has not been studied.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in all mammals that helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. In addition to its use as an aesthetic treatment, hyaluronic acid has also been used for more than 20 years for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement as well as for eye surgeries and wound repair.

What is cross-linked hyaluronic acid?

“Uncross-linked” hyaluronic acid in its natural form is in a liquid stat. “Cross-linking” is the process through which hyaluronic acid is made into a gel product that can be injected into the skin for long-lasting results.

How is JUVÉDERM® dermal filler used in treatment?

Your healthcare provider eases JUVÉDERM® dermal filler into the skin using a fine needle to temporarily fill in and augment the treatment area and smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds such as “smile lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds) and “marionette lines” (oral commissures). JUVÉDERM® dermal filler temporarily adds volume to the skin and may give the appearance of a smoother surface.

What will treatment with JUVÉDERM® dermal filler accomplish?

JUVÉDERM® dermal filler will help to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoother. Is treatment with JUVÉDERM® dermal filler painful?

What are possible side effects of JUVÉDERM® dermal filler?

Most side effects are mild to moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less). The most coming side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary injection site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching and discoloration. As with all skin injection procedures there is a risk of infection.

Can people with different skin tones/colours be treated with JUVÉDERM® dermal filler?

Yes. In fact, JUVÉDERM® dermal filler is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has proven its safety and effectiveness in persons of colour. Studies with JUVÉDERM®  dermal filler showed no increased risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in patients of colour.
