Breast Reconstruction
Breast Reconstruction is performed to rebuild a woman’s breast following a mastectomy for cancer. There are number of options available today to make a woman feel better about her appearance. It is important to be realistic and aware that a reconstructed breast won’t look exactly like your original breast, nor will it maintain the same sensation as your breast once did, however, it will create symmetry and contribute to a more complete sense of self.
“Breast reconstruction post mastectomy has improved the quality of life for many women. It’s not surprising that these surgical procedures are life altering for many patients,” explains Dr. Nancy Van Laeken.
“Women often grieve the loss of a breast,” confirms Dr. Van Laeken. “Long after the breast is removed, they have a constant reminder of what they went through. Many women, especially young women, are very concerned about living with the deformity of a missing breast, but with today’s reconstruction options, we can remove the day-to-day reminder of the life-threatening surgery and follow-up procedures.
“Our goal is to educate women.” Dr. Van Laeken explains, “There are a number of options available for breast reconstruction to minimize the body image changes associated with treating cancer. This can be addressed either immediately following the mastectomy or at a later date. Regardless of timing, breast reconstruction can improve the quality of life for women, both physically and psychologically.”
